FWIW, I had similar prices as an undergraduate in a completely different state. On campus housing prices are always insane.

Off campus, my per month cost was cut in half or more. But the problem is in CA there's a known trend of ever increasing rent prices.

For the people who are okay with pirating here, think twice before pirating tax software.

Even pirated software can know it's pirated. When that happens the company has no legal reprecussions to making a mistake on the form or adding a watermark to the relevant files that tip the gov off.
