The expansion of Uber and other gig companies is built on a strategy of (mis)classifying drivers as independent contractors and generally avoiding labor and employment law obligations at nearly any cost, including spending hundreds of millions of dollars in multiple states to exempt themselves from those laws. At the same time, many of the people who have helped them along the way have had prominent posts in the Obama administration, including David Plouffe and Tony West.
