As I understand it, given current conditions, Earth's core would eventually cool, and then the magnetic field would fail, and cosmic radiation as well as the sun would strip away the atmosphere, and it would eventually end up like Mars. But the Sun will become a red giant and probably swallow the planet before that happens.
