how fast can you type?

Attempt #1, made 1 mistake at the start, and got 126 WPM, 531 CPM. Attempt #2, made 0 mistakes, got 120 WPM, 506 CPM.

I had to click start and stop which took more time, and I am much faster typing what I am thinking than copying arbitrary text. I can essentially type about 150 WPM when I am cranking.

I have no idea if this is your area or is even related to what you do/know about but, what advice would you give to someone who gets randomly DDoSed (?) when playing games.

I realise it is quite a common thing but I am no-where near tech savvy enough to understand how to fix it through most explanations i've been given and I was hoping you could help to explain it in a more natural way.

Here's to hoping! Also, entertaining AmA

I would suspect that your internet connection is just bad, not that you are being DDoSed. DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service; which in simple terms just means a whole lot of different people sending information to your computer to overwhelm it.

I suppose it is possible if you are playing games with clans, that you are pissing off some clan that is using DDoS software, and they are using it on you just to screw you up, but it is somewhat doubtful that is going on.

The only way to be certain would be to capture whatever incoming "DDoS traffic" is being sent to your connection.

In most cases, a true DDoS should be saturating the speed of your internet connection. That is, if you use basic monitoring software and look at how much ethernet traffic is flowing into your computer, it should be much higher during DDoS than when you are playing the game normally.

Also, even if a "clan" is attacking you, that is not a true DDoS, because a clan is likely 20-30 people at most. DDoS in the form that is commonly thought of it typically botnets with hundreds if not thousands of machines.

People who operate botnets are not going to run a DDoS against you. There is no point.

Sorry, but whatever is going wrong when you are playing games is probably not a DDoS.

Don't know if this is an idiotic question but did you ever give yourself a hacker "pseudo name?" like an identity that the cyber world know you from? Also, are you by chance slightly famous on the cyber world?

krage282 karma

I've used a number of different online pen-names. The one in the search warrant "theppm7" is one I used for only a couple of days related to this specific event. It is in no way meaningful.

The username of my reddit account is one of my online pen-names. I blog using it on google: http://krage28.blogspot.com/

I also have a ton of photography and artwork done by me on google as well: http://picasaweb.google.com/krage28

I wouldn't say I am particularly notable in the cyber world. The only online thing notable I've done really is stir up a bunch of controversy over some open source software I wrote, due to showing benchmarks proving easily that it runs 10-30x faster than similar software.

I do not have a known hacker name in the underground hacker "arena", because when I tried to become a part of it 15 years ago all of the people I met in it were very mean and treated me like crap. They also demanded I do illegal things to become part of their "club", so I never went down that route in life.

I am an employed professional.

I was well known under some names on some of the forums I used to use, mainly due to my trollish method of responding to things, but it was only famous on the particular forum.

If i were you, i would be fucking proud. Seriously, getting raided by FBI and Secret Service sounds really cool.

krage281 karma

Yes it was really cool. I was pretty pumped for the first half of the raid. Then reality sets in and you realize you are gonna get fucked somewhat later due to the raid occurring.

Then you lose your job.

Then someone presses charges against you ( hasn't happened yet )

Next thing you know you are in federal pmita prison. I have long hair, and both my ears are pierced. I am also not gay. The idea of prison isn't very appealing to me.

do you play games?

whats your favorite?

krage282 karma

I did play tons of games in the past. I do play a fair amount still, but not as much as I did when I was a kid and had summers off.

I own the following video game systems:

  • NES
  • SNES
  • N64
  • GC
  • Wii
  • Wii U
  • Gameboy
  • Gameboy Color
  • Gameboy DS
  • 3DS
  • 3DS XL Zelda Edition
  • Atari 2600
  • Atari 5200
  • Atari Lynx
  • Sega Gamegear
  • Sega Dreamcast
  • Sony Playstation ( original )
  • PS2 ( slim )
  • PS2 ( fat / regular )
  • PS3 ( fat / original )
  • PS3 ( slim )
  • PS4
  • PSP ( original )
  • PSP 3000
  • PSVita
  • others... more... getting bored of listing them

My favorite games include the following:

  • Solitaire ( I am nationally ranked among the top 100 in the USA )
  • Minesweeper
  • Chip's Challenge ( for the original Atari Lynx; the Windows version sucks )
  • All versions of Lemmings ( including revolution )
  • All versions of Load Runner ( C64, PC Isometric, etc )
  • All versions of Bomberman ( Atomic Bomberman is the best imo )
  • Portal 1 and 2 ( despite both being easy )
  • Goldeneye ( I can get within 5 seconds of the international best times on all levels on all difficulties )

I own over 500 games on Steam. I pretty much picked these games as my favorites at random. It is very hard to pick; there are a ton of great games in existence.

Hi there, I am a highschool student who wants to be a white hat hacker in the future and was wondering what the best way to start learning now.

krage281 karma

The best way to start learning is to go to the library and start reading books that you can understand at least around 30% of. Skim the parts you don't get.

It's better to buy books and highlight what strikes you as important, but the library is free. This may not be a problem for you if your parents have money and/or endorse your interest. There are places to get books free or cheap too. ( such as goodwill, or in the baltimore area, The Book Thing )

Also, you must have your own computer obviously. Google how and install a LAMP or a WAMP stack and try making some basic webpages. That should be fun.

Learn some C++ and install Cygwin and/or MinGW in Windows to try out examples. If you want to spend money go buy an educational copy of Visual Studio for Windows. Your school may enable you to get a copy of it for as little as $10.

This post isn't hidden at all. I found it.

krage281 karma

Perhaps an admin took it out of visibility when I put up that I was going to sleep and would begin answering questions again in the morning? I am not sure. It was hidden for a number of hours last night. I don't know why.

omegaman01 karma

What is your favourite quote from your favourite book?

krage281 karma

I use multiple quotes, from multiple books, using a scheme more complex than the one described. That is also just a portion of the passwords I use. Keyfiles are used as well in combination. Currently I have memorized about 300 characters worth of different passwords.

gthomson02011 karma

what kind of signature is that from the judge jesus

krage281 karma

You should see my signature, it is far far worse. I previously worked at a bank as a teller and had to sign my name about 100 times per day. After you do that for enough months you stop caring and just scribble something.
