What are the biggest differences you have noticed between the music industry in the US compared to the music industry in the Netherlands?

Industry I wouldn't really know, I'm not so into that part, radio is vastly different though. All stations cater to one genre only here and repeat the songs over and over, with hardly room for dj let alone their creativity. That's totally different back in Holland.

Im sure you do call ins and such, weirdest caller you've ever had?

Now let's be honest. Do you often lie about your opinion on new records?

Often I hear DJ's praising an obviously crappy catering-to-the-lowest-common-denominator song to heaven, and I'm not buying it. DJ's are professionals, they at least have an ear for quality music. It's like the owner of the museum of modern art writing his newsletter and telling his readers how much he likes reproductions of crying gypsy kids.

I don't lie. Sure, there are songs I love more than others but I know that a lot of listeners like it. I will play it, but not mention whether I love or hate it. Just play it, that's it.

What is your opinion about platforms for streaming music (i.e Spotify, Deezer)? Has it changed the music industry for you?

And do you listen to your own radio station on off days, or do you listen to other (Dutch) radio stations?

It sure changed the way I listen to music. I tend to listen to music matching the weather, my mood, guests, events, whatever. In terms of changing the industry, it might turn around the crisis since it actually seems to be profitable now. At home I mostly listen to my own music, streaming services or 3FM, in the car I switch between all stations.

Weirdest prejudice you got at SXSW ?

None, really. The whole "hey Amsterdam, drugs and whores" stuff is kinda over, it seems?

Maybe you could edit the title or description. 3FM is of course well known in the Netherlands, but for the rest of the globe it would be useful to know that it's a public radio station and one of the most popular in .NL

What do you wish 3FM allowed you to do that they don't?

I've been staring at my screen for a while now trying to think of something, but I can't think of anything that would make sense to do that I'm not allowed.

I've always wanted to get in to radio, do you have any tips?

Find a local or college radio station where they'll let you volunteer until it hurts. Practice, practice, practice.

How is your relationship with Roosmarijn? I know you are always pranking each other on the radio, but are you friends off air too? :)

We've been friends way before we became colleagues. Been on holiday trips together and stuff.

Is SXSW a music festival? Or a music business festival?

Mostly music, but the business part is big. Bands can be spotted by some major forces in the industry here.

It's exactly that: an amazing roller coaster!

What´s your biggest discovery at SXSW? And what acts are you looking forward to?

Was really surprised in a good way by Atlas Genius and Flume, looking forward to Major Lazer and Green Day hopefully Justin Timberlake. Macklemore was the best I've seen so far.

Where does your huge love for Disney come from? I love them myself too, but I'm not as devoted as you.

I'm really inspired by the works of Walt Disney, the man. He was never satisfied with good enough, it had to be the best. If that meant investing all your profits into making the next film even better, so be it. That devotion can be seen in all the early and the best of the modern day works.

Any real interest in Lunartheory down there or is he just a Canadian phenom?

Never heard of it, actually. Does that answer the question?

What do you think the next big pop music genre will be? like in the 70 we had disco , the 80s were hard rock/heavy metal , the 90 was rap and electronic. what will the next genre be? antwoorden in het nederlands mag ook.

Ik weet niet of het echt 1 genre is -- alles mag en kan tegenwoordig door elkaar, het is 1 grote melting pot.

How did you like Enschede this year? Do you notice any major differences between audiences in different cities, regarding ''het Glazen huis''?

Enschede and the audience alike were MASSIVE.

How do you like the food in Austin? Have you had BBQ yet? Breakfast tacos?

No breakfast tacos, but Mexican for sure!

Whats done for fun in Netherlands?

If you had to compare SXSW to anything and everything that happens in the Netherlands music-/festivalwise, how would you describe it? Eurosonic meets ADE meets Uitmarkt?

Meets Koninginnedag, takes steroids and books a week to a sunny destination.

English: They do a fundraiser every year, sitting in a glass house for a couple of days raising millions and not eating. My question is if it is hard to do when the charity isn't really your thing on a personal level.

Ik heb de 'mazzel' gehad dat ik twee jaar een thema heb gehad dat super universeel was: schoon drinkwater en baby's redden. Daar hoef je niet zoveel aan uit te leggen.

Er zijn ook wel eens thema's geweest die misschien wat meer uitleg nodig hadden, maar het is nooit een kwestie geweest van wel of niet aanspreken; they're all boiling down to saving lives.

How would you rate the Canadian talent down there? Are you looking forward to any Canadian acts?

I wouldn't really know, actually. Haven't seen any Canadian bands so far...

Waar is de Michiel gebleven die naar Spitsbergen is gegaan? Het eerste jaar bij 3fm had je nog een leuk draaiboek met diverse nummers. Daarna werd je een soort 538 dj. Dezelfde gebaken lucht die in de top40 staat keer op keer op keer overnieuw.

Die Michiel zit nu in Austin, om precies te zijn. En is maandag weer in Hilversum. Ik maak met dezelfde passie, liefde en inzet radioprogramma's als 6 jaar geleden, met 6 jaar meer ervaring hooguit.

wat is jouw favoriete muziek ?

Mijn favoriete bands zijn Weezer, REM en Crowded House. Maar er is zoveel moois! Rock, dance, pop, indie... ik kan moeilijk kiezen.

Is het sowieso wel leuk om tussen die 2000+ optredens te moeten kiezen? Ik zou denk ik altijd de angst hebben dat je wat mist, wat je ook altijd doet...

Je pikt er hooguit 4 of 5 absolute must-sees uit en verder moet je je vooral laten verrassen.

Zijn jullie hele dagen in de studio of redactie (8 uur per dag) of minder?

We komen meestal rond 10u 's ochtends binnen en dan duurt de uitzending tot 19u lokale tijd, deur gaat om 21u weer dicht.

Hoe groot is de redactie van MetMichiel? Wat voor voorbereidende taken doe je zelf en wat doet de redactie?

Eindredacteur Lois, producer Tjitse, productie-assistente Merel, internetredacteur Henny, audiovormgever Jan-Paul. Ik stel met Hugo van de 3FM muziekredactie het programma samen, zoek info bij alle platen die we draaien en overleg met Tjitse over de verdere inhoud.

Als jij zegt: My English is so rusty as an old tuinhek, hoe wil je dan in godsnaam dat ik mijn Engels voor morgen nog goed kan leren joh? Ik lig dubbel hier!;-)

Wat voor advies zou je iemand geven die bij de radio achter de schermen wil werken? (Redacteur/producer) Ik mag binnenkort stage gaan lopen. (journalistiek) Heb je daar ook tips voor?

Tips: journalistiek is ZEKER voor achter de schermen een goed uitgangspunt. Verder ervaring opdoen, zoek een lokale omroep. Qua stage: de grote shows als GIEL, Coen en Sander etc werken naar mijn weten regelmatig met stagiairs.

Gezien de creatieve vrijheid van de dj's en de diversiteit van 3FM, denk je dat er in de nabije toekomst bij 3FM ook meer ruimte komt voor EDM? Ik merk wel dat er de laatste tijd de hits zoals cannonball enzo worden gedraaid maar veel verder dan dat komt 3FM op dit moment ook niet.

Goede vraag. We partly go where the music takes us. Er is sowieso al veel meer electronica de laatste jaren en dat hoor je ook.

En los van het feit dat ik niet weet wie je bedoelt :) zou ik ieders vertrek bij 3FM op dit moment heel jammer vinden. De zender doet het goed op alle fronten nu en dat komt doordat ie is zoals ie is.

Hoe ben je in het DJ vak beland en hoe kan men daar komen nu?

Ik heb veel bij lokale omroepen aan lopen prutsen: oefenen, oefenen, oefenen. Op een gegeven moment kwam er via via een plekje vrij.
