Edit: Thanks a bunch yall, this is the end of the LIVE portion of the AMA, but I'll come back and answer some more questions over the coming days.... i gotta go rock a piss now, big time.

Hello Reddit! I’m Jacob Rolfe, I play the character of Jacob Collins, the long-suffering son-in-law of Ricky on the Canadian TV program and movies Trailer Park Boys.

Proof Photo: https://imgur.com/a/PkteOHp

I’m also an illustrator, screen-printer, traveler, and general pot smoker.

I’ll be here ‘live’ answering questions for three hours (11-2 ET), but I’m a rather slow two-finger-one-thumb typer, so if needed I’ll also come back and answer additional questions later.

If you miss the AMA, you can check out my art at baaam.ca , check out some vids on my YouTube channel youtube.com/@hootsmcgee7896, or visit r/trailerparkboysGOOD where I'm a moderator and frequent contributor. Can I get a BAM?

JacobMcCollins2948 karma

yes, one big bam for everybody :)

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!

jamrockandroll781 karma

In your opinion, what was the most ridiculous scene you had to film in all the show’s history?

JacobMcCollins1314 karma

Gosh.... getting my balls (almost) chewed off by a dog before doing crimes at the mall comes to mind, but so many possibilities.

Lj999-773 karma

Greatest memory working with Mike, John and Rob?

JacobMcCollins1838 karma

just riding around in the Shitmobile... surreal. maybe it was the gas fumes

Poops_McYolo166 karma

How did you guys keep that thing running? How would you film on actual roads?

JacobMcCollins659 karma

there was a whole team keeping that thing going in scenes... it needs to be brought in on a flatbed, jumped started every time... gas fumes galore... frustrating but pretty funny and certainly on brand. the roads would need to be shit down by lollipop folks (traffic control).

canadiantravis89642 karma

Also, how much fun was season 7 for you? Getting a more prominent on-screen role and getting to be Julian Jr. must've been fun on set.

JacobMcCollins813 karma

it was very fun. as a non-actor being plunged into that environment was very surreal... at times nerve-racking having to do things in front of a camera, but super fun as well

disco_chew569 karma

Hey Jacob love the instagram and content! Heres my Question: Were Barb's scalloped potatos really that fucked?

JacobMcCollins841 karma

watery...... bland.... lumpy.... yes, totally fucked!

noinnocentbystander466 karma

How much of the show is improvised? Who is the best improviser in the cast? Love the show!!

JacobMcCollins1079 karma

The boys are amazing improvisors, but the best by far is Jonathan Torrence. Dudes a machine. (One you cant turn off, even when you want to ;)

ZEnterprises236 karma

Jonathan Torrence.

Nam sayin?

Lord_Spliffington402 karma

Do you have any stories about working with Phil Collins?

JacobMcCollins633 karma

ya know, my memories are mostly of him being chill and supportive. he had some more acting experience than me so helped my feel comfortable on set.

working in scenes was fun and sometimes funny... he had a bumbling quality about him sometimes that would send some takes sideways, but eventually get the perfect Phil Collins scene :D

KidnappingColor333 karma

Do you miss John Dunsworth?

JacobMcCollins639 karma

who doesnt. RIP Johnny boy.

doughie195 karma

Came here to say something about this man. First off, he didn't drink at all, he's just a hilarious actor. Second off, check out his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mcQfP8k51s

JacobMcCollins144 karma

checking it, thanks :) a hilarious and skilled actor indeed :)

N00bpkerxx328 karma

How much money do you think Ricky has stolen from you in cigarettes and pepperoni throughout the years?

JacobMcCollins644 karma

in TPB world: probably $8000 worth. Canadian dollars.
in real life: maybe $5

gravitysfault238 karma

Hello Jacob, I hope you're doing well and thank you for being part of TPB!! I have 2 questions. The first is from my friend : were Phil's burps real? The second from me : What is one memory from the set that you still treasure a lot? Thank you!

JacobMcCollins324 karma

as i recall, Richard (aka Phil) could deliver VERY impressive burps, but they may have over-dubbed them in post to make them even MORE crazy... there's certainly word out there that J-Roc is the master burper.. cant speak to the accuracy

Davemanye237 karma

Are you a flower or dab kinda guy?

JacobMcCollins486 karma

flower all the way. and edibles part of the way. dabs on occasion.

jatt5abidosto213 karma

Is there ever actual drinking during filming?

JacobMcCollins465 karma

theres this gross fake weed stuff they use on film sets... real stanky dry crud. someone should invent a better herbal blend.

diiejso246 karma

John Dunsworth (Lahey) said it was iced tea. And for doing such a fantastic job portraying a drunk, he rarely ever drank alcohol.

JacobMcCollins182 karma

some days youd have a choice... though yes certain pops would look more like certain liquors

JacobMcCollins238 karma

that would be a pretty huge no-no... TPB was/is an actual film set!

speedyhemi81 karma

How about the smoking herb during filming? Did Snoop bust out real spliffs? 🤣

JacobMcCollins303 karma

im pretty sure Snoop doesn't smoke fake weed. i dunno, but i feel thats the case.

dabasauras-rex35 karma

I have a feeling the answer is probably no unfortunately. In fact I’m pretty sure the whiskey and rum tends to be iced tea or water with food coloring in it

JacobMcCollins137 karma

my drink really was Doctor Pepper

canadiantravis89210 karma

It's one I'm sure you hear a lot, but will there be any more TPB in the future? Hard without Lahey for sure but I think it could be done well.

JacobMcCollins465 karma

I've heard a little birdy say that three other little birdies said at a fan convention that Yes, indeed there was more TPB coming down the weed pipe. or shit pipe.... covid restrictions really cramped things up in the filming department

canadianteam209 karma

What are your feelings about Michael Jackson, aka Trevor the elongated twiggy alien leaving the show. Do you agree/disagree with statements he's made in the past about the work environment, treatment, compensation, etc. Have you or the cast had any communication with him that you know of?

JacobMcCollins322 karma

It's unfortunate he felt fucked over. as a working class dude, i was always pretty happy with pay on TPB, it pays way more than restaurant work, which was my main thing before i started focusing on art more. It (acting, even at base union rates of about CAD$1000) is not bad. Days can be few and far between though, believe you me.

But i digress... by my understanding, production asked Mike to come back along with Corey in season 8.... Corey said yes, but Mike... the rest is history... but who knows maybe someday!!

JacobMcCollins343 karma

note: ive been paid the base union rate, and also considerable more, no complaints... though it would be nice if royalties bought more than a couple of ounces of weed a year... Canadian TV for ya!

canadiantravis89142 karma

Finally, whatever happened to your brother? I always hoped we'd get him back in the Netflix episodes haha. That guy was intense.

JacobMcCollins249 karma

Mike O'Neal (Thomas Collins) is a good pal of Mike Clattenburg, and one of the sound dudes on TPB in earlier seasons. ... O'Neal didn't want to do the role really, rumour was that Clattenburg convinced him to do it for laughs...

Who knows, maybe he'll return to the park one day....

Orangeb0lt132 karma

Any knowledge of new TPB coming down the line? I watched the Jail episodes, but obviously i want to see how Jacob is handling the Dirty Burger now that Phil has passed.

JacobMcCollins144 karma

ive heard positive rumours!

fin_findlay125 karma

Of all the artwork you've done, which piece is your favourite?

JacobMcCollins221 karma

really tough to say.... maybe The Wheel of Deluded Capitalist Existence. i usually get bored or whatever with a piece and bring it to a close, but that was for a friends band originally so i had to keep working on it, and working on it.... and it worked out pretty good!

YoureFullOfIt82215 karma

The Wheel of Deluded Capitalist Existence

DMagnus11123 karma

How's your neck?

JacobMcCollins207 karma

oh man i may have to get a real neck brace soon. my real life back is fucked... but i still get around!

tootired4disshit58 karma

Damn dude I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure they could write that into the show easily anyway. You're an awesome actor/character thanks for doing this AMA!

JacobMcCollins125 karma

i may have overstated the fucked-upedness there.. its just a regular bad back. every year or two im laid up with spasms for a week or so.... those times are bad otherwise its just an average 48 year old back I reckon ;)

FartMongerSupreme117 karma

What are your thoughts on the transition from when they had Mike Clattenburg vs after he was no longer on the project?

JacobMcCollins263 karma

Knowing i wasnt a trained actor, Clattenburg would often provide more direction and tips on how to deliver a line or whatever.... during later seasons when there was a new director for almost every episode, they didnt know me as well and often expect me to know more 'acting stuff' than i did/do...

funplayer3s117 karma

How did you actually meet the boys?

JacobMcCollins386 karma

Mike Clattenburg's (at the time) wife, Ann-Marie (sp?) was a make-up artist on a set i was doing some background acting on, back in 1999 or 2000 (fyi the movie was Scotland PA featuring Christopher Walken!). Knowing Mike was looking for sketchy dudes to fill small roles, she got my info and passed it along.... the rest is Sunnyvale history!

Criss_Crossx97 karma

Long time TPB fan, it's my favorite show! Got me through some tough times.

Question: What is your favorite burger to eat?

JacobMcCollins139 karma

A bacon single cheeseburger with the works. Ummmmm , i may have to go for one after this AMA!

JacobMcCollins115 karma

with fries

canucklurker92 karma

I'm straight but kinda want to make babies with J-roc. He's got the Street Cents.

Is that wrong?

JacobMcCollins112 karma

that's natural i think

idpickpizzaoveryou87 karma

Dude I just wanted say I love you and your work. Never seen my fiancee laugh harder than watching TPB after telling me time and time she never would.

Does Jonathan Torrens smell good?

BAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!

JacobMcCollins84 karma

cheers :) yeah Jonathan is very well groomed

Spyce86 karma

Do you still see the boys? Any chance of another season or spin off with you and Trinity

JacobMcCollins163 karma

'Fours a Crowd' with me, Trin, Mo and Ricky?

I havent been on set in a while, but anticipate some TPB action in the relatively near future.

hkzor74 karma

Hey Jacob! In your opinion, who is the most underrated character in all of TPB? If you can, elaborate your answer.

JacobMcCollins218 karma

maybe Donny? Never seen on camera, but heard through the park keeping noise-makers in line....

TBH im overdue to watch the whole series again... maybe ill do so this winter, treat it as 'work' during my working holiday

edited for spelling

auzofravensknoll-2 karma

Jacob is the most under-rated! He is the only character whose real-life name is the same as his character name. That makes him the most TPB of all the TPBs in my books.

JacobMcCollins10 karma

thanks haha, i may be the most TPB in real life, but for other reasons ;)

xaniel9963 karma

How does it feel to be part of the greatest Canadian TV Show ever made?

JacobMcCollins73 karma

surreal. trippy. good... i like it :)

metaglot60 karma

Holy shit! In season 7 youre driving with Ray in that beige car, and he hits a tree and the car jumps and the door on your side gets all warped. That scene has had me in stitches so many times. How well prepared was that?

JacobMcCollins90 karma

zero percent prepared.
im pretty sure the crash was unintentional... though theres a possibility they just didn't tell me to get a natural reaction. that could have ended very badly though.

pieman231357 karma

What are your favorite stories of a time you and the boys went completely off script that did and did not make the show?

JacobMcCollins113 karma

let me rewatch some episodes and let it jog my memory... i havent watched the series's in ages, other than season 4 last winter, which was VERY enjoyable.

ill follow up.

unseatedlight52 karma

How do you feel about being made to steal piss in the movie for Julian. Do you think an idea like that in real life would be lucrative?

JacobMcCollins70 karma

that was fun... cool set... though i tweaked my back having to duck through the trap door carrying the big bottle of piss!

yeah i think money could be made, IS being made, selling piss, though not from soldiers, those guys are drugged up big time (some of the ones i know ;)

Gubzs43 karma

I have a bunch! You can answer some or all or none!

Will we ever get more live action main series TPB? John was a critical player in the show but it's a shame to see it end.

How scripted is all the slapstick in the show? Falls, breaking shit, smacking each other, etc. I get the feeling the show goes off script frequently.

What's casting like for such a unique show?

In the episodes where Jacob was working like 6 jobs to support trinity and baby Mo, how in the fuck did the props and makeup come together to make you look so fucked up because that was hysterical. 😂

Which cast member is most like their character in real life?

Your character showed up really early in the series as a more relatively normal person, I think season 1 when Ricky is robbing the gas station, but not as a main character. How did Jacob go from being a somewhat straight man to Ricky's nonsense to a main character in the show?

How much fun did you all have shooting the lost in the woods episodes where they boys are having you build a cigarette train to America?

Cheers bud!

JacobMcCollins86 karma

yo bud!

Main series: i've heard rumours, and think i saw a video clip of The Boys at a fan convention indicating YES.

Scripted: about 65%. LOTS of improv and alternate takes. I'm not a big improvisor and tend to stick to the script, but sometimes am thrown into the fire so to speak. The Boys are masters... often doing new jokes/insults (if im around haha) every take.

I've sometimes considered the similarities between my character and me..... i think some members of the Roc Pile might be not too far off.....

Thanks for calling me normal. Or more normal haha. Yeah, i was 'around Sunnyvale' in early seasons, but then Cory and Trevor left the show they needed jail cover for the boys so my part was expanded (along with the Alien Trevors) in season 7.

The woods were cold, fucked, bug infested, and fun as fuck!

Poise!!!

EpicSombreroMan38 karma

What's the biggest highlight of your career so far, as an actor or artist, etc?

JacobMcCollins106 karma

working on Trailer Park Boys

mojitorandy38 karma

I live abroad and once in a while I get asked about Canadian tv shows. I inevitably mention TPB is a must see classic. Are there any episodes that you feel really stand out?

JacobMcCollins65 karma

Maybe begin with season 2?
The 'roughness' of season 1 might be a little challenging for some... though it tough because so much of the humour is based on knowing the Boy's characters, and ideally one would want to build up from the beginning.... i'd be curious to know others opinions about this.

As mentioned elsewhere today, i really need to re-watch ALL the seasons.

Feeling_Love_123737 karma

Are there anything’s you said no to while filming TPB?

JacobMcCollins119 karma

haha, there usually say yes to crazy shit, from wearing a banana hammock to some of my own stunts like being cross-checked out the window by Ricky, but one time I can recall insisting on a stunt dude was the scene where the horse kicks 'me' through the barn wall (season 12).

The production had weakened the boards, and thought I could do it, but i think my back was feeling not-super-strong and i had a bad feeling about the stunt... so they got a stunt dude. It worked out pretty convincingly id say.

Mookie007x29 karma

Are you willing to do any other projects?

JacobMcCollins95 karma

totally. though my acting range is narrow, basically 'Jacob Collins' type characters... which are pretty much 'Jacob Rolfe' type characters....

auzofravensknoll4 karma

Hint: Film it in India or Thailand. Our boi Jacob loves to travel in Asia.

JacobMcCollins10 karma

double totally!

SpicyMarge28 karma

Do you make art every day?

JacobMcCollins33 karma

more in fits and starts... these days about 5 days a week.

tylerlees77722 karma

Has your artwork ever been in an episode?

JacobMcCollins42 karma

Yes... as i recall, theres a Lets Get High poster in Ricky's weed shop, and Drugs Are Rad in the hospital when Ricky's in a coma. Maybe more :)

arumrunner21 karma

Was there ever any real weed on the set?

JacobMcCollins23 karma

Everyone wants to know! See below

PlanetLandon20 karma

I heard that once the show switched over to a “fake” trailer park, some of the crew actually lived in the trailers during production. Is that true?

JacobMcCollins24 karma

Probably! Can't 100% verify.

Jimmy_Bimboto19 karma

Hi Jacob! Thanks for the AMA and congrats on playing that ridiculously funny character :) Whas there a scene where you guys were broking character/laughing so hard that you thought you'd never be able to make it?

JacobMcCollins34 karma

Thanks Jimmy.

Yeah from time to time actors would get the giggles, or break character when funny or unexpected stuff happens. One trick to try to save the scene is to turn away before breaking into a grin... at least its not on camera.

But I didn't have that issue much.. I sometimes one of my most valuable abilities on set is not laughing at funny shit.

specific scenes don't come to mind... my brain works in strange ways though, ill followup when i remember haha

TheMostCuntiestCunt17 karma

Will we ever get more Trailer Park Boys content like the prison season?

JacobMcCollins18 karma

see above... good odds i'd say.

ray5ry14 karma

Could you tell us something really weird and/or completely unexpected about you?

JacobMcCollins44 karma

My blood has super high levels of gadolinium for no known reason.

theonlyxero10 karma

Do you have a favorite memory with John Dunsworth on set? Seemed like you guys all had a blast filming the show!!

JacobMcCollins18 karma

It was a total blast, if at times nerve-racking for me as a non-trained-actor. John was a pleasure to work with, so gregarious... i remember most the scenes in season 7 where he wires me up to betray and get dirt on The Boys. He would go out of his way to make folks feel comfortable, what a bloke.
