In your opinion, what was the most ridiculous scene you had to film in all the show’s history?

Gosh.... getting my balls (almost) chewed off by a dog before doing crimes at the mall comes to mind, but so many possibilities.

just riding around in the Shitmobile... surreal. maybe it was the gas fumes

How did you guys keep that thing running? How would you film on actual roads?

there was a whole team keeping that thing going in scenes... it needs to be brought in on a flatbed, jumped started every time... gas fumes galore... frustrating but pretty funny and certainly on brand. the roads would need to be shit down by lollipop folks (traffic control).

Also, how much fun was season 7 for you? Getting a more prominent on-screen role and getting to be Julian Jr. must've been fun on set.

it was very fun. as a non-actor being plunged into that environment was very surreal... at times nerve-racking having to do things in front of a camera, but super fun as well

Do you have any stories about working with Phil Collins?

ya know, my memories are mostly of him being chill and supportive. he had some more acting experience than me so helped my feel comfortable on set.

working in scenes was fun and sometimes funny... he had a bumbling quality about him sometimes that would send some takes sideways, but eventually get the perfect Phil Collins scene :D

as i recall, Richard (aka Phil) could deliver VERY impressive burps, but they may have over-dubbed them in post to make them even MORE crazy... there's certainly word out there that J-Roc is the master burper.. cant speak to the accuracy

Is there ever actual drinking during filming?

theres this gross fake weed stuff they use on film sets... real stanky dry crud. someone should invent a better herbal blend.

John Dunsworth (Lahey) said it was iced tea. And for doing such a fantastic job portraying a drunk, he rarely ever drank alcohol.

some days youd have a choice... though yes certain pops would look more like certain liquors

What are your feelings about Michael Jackson, aka Trevor the elongated twiggy alien leaving the show. Do you agree/disagree with statements he's made in the past about the work environment, treatment, compensation, etc. Have you or the cast had any communication with him that you know of?

It's unfortunate he felt fucked over. as a working class dude, i was always pretty happy with pay on TPB, it pays way more than restaurant work, which was my main thing before i started focusing on art more. It (acting, even at base union rates of about CAD$1000) is not bad. Days can be few and far between though, believe you me.

But i digress... by my understanding, production asked Mike to come back along with Corey in season 8.... Corey said yes, but Mike... the rest is history... but who knows maybe someday!!

note: ive been paid the base union rate, and also considerable more, no complaints... though it would be nice if royalties bought more than a couple of ounces of weed a year... Canadian TV for ya!

Finally, whatever happened to your brother? I always hoped we'd get him back in the Netflix episodes haha. That guy was intense.

Mike O'Neal (Thomas Collins) is a good pal of Mike Clattenburg, and one of the sound dudes on TPB in earlier seasons. ... O'Neal didn't want to do the role really, rumour was that Clattenburg convinced him to do it for laughs...

Who knows, maybe he'll return to the park one day....

Any knowledge of new TPB coming down the line? I watched the Jail episodes, but obviously i want to see how Jacob is handling the Dirty Burger now that Phil has passed.

Of all the artwork you've done, which piece is your favourite?

really tough to say.... maybe The Wheel of Deluded Capitalist Existence. i usually get bored or whatever with a piece and bring it to a close, but that was for a friends band originally so i had to keep working on it, and working on it.... and it worked out pretty good!

i may have overstated the fucked-upedness there.. its just a regular bad back. every year or two im laid up with spasms for a week or so.... those times are bad otherwise its just an average 48 year old back I reckon ;)

What are your thoughts on the transition from when they had Mike Clattenburg vs after he was no longer on the project?

Knowing i wasnt a trained actor, Clattenburg would often provide more direction and tips on how to deliver a line or whatever.... during later seasons when there was a new director for almost every episode, they didnt know me as well and often expect me to know more 'acting stuff' than i did/do...

How did you actually meet the boys?

Mike Clattenburg's (at the time) wife, Ann-Marie (sp?) was a make-up artist on a set i was doing some background acting on, back in 1999 or 2000 (fyi the movie was Scotland PA featuring Christopher Walken!). Knowing Mike was looking for sketchy dudes to fill small roles, she got my info and passed it along.... the rest is Sunnyvale history!

Jacob is the most under-rated! He is the only character whose real-life name is the same as his character name. That makes him the most TPB of all the TPBs in my books.

Holy shit! In season 7 youre driving with Ray in that beige car, and he hits a tree and the car jumps and the door on your side gets all warped. That scene has had me in stitches so many times. How well prepared was that?

zero percent prepared.
im pretty sure the crash was unintentional... though theres a possibility they just didn't tell me to get a natural reaction. that could have ended very badly though.

What are your favorite stories of a time you and the boys went completely off script that did and did not make the show?

let me rewatch some episodes and let it jog my memory... i havent watched the series's in ages, other than season 4 last winter, which was VERY enjoyable.

How do you feel about being made to steal piss in the movie for Julian. Do you think an idea like that in real life would be lucrative?

that was fun... cool set... though i tweaked my back having to duck through the trap door carrying the big bottle of piss!

yeah i think money could be made, IS being made, selling piss, though not from soldiers, those guys are drugged up big time (some of the ones i know ;)

In the episodes where Jacob was working like 6 jobs to support trinity and baby Mo, how in the fuck did the props and makeup come together to make you look so fucked up because that was hysterical. 😂

Your character showed up really early in the series as a more relatively normal person, I think season 1 when Ricky is robbing the gas station, but not as a main character. How did Jacob go from being a somewhat straight man to Ricky's nonsense to a main character in the show?

How much fun did you all have shooting the lost in the woods episodes where they boys are having you build a cigarette train to America?

Main series: i've heard rumours, and think i saw a video clip of The Boys at a fan convention indicating YES.

Scripted: about 65%. LOTS of improv and alternate takes. I'm not a big improvisor and tend to stick to the script, but sometimes am thrown into the fire so to speak. The Boys are masters... often doing new jokes/insults (if im around haha) every take.

I've sometimes considered the similarities between my character and me..... i think some members of the Roc Pile might be not too far off.....

Thanks for calling me normal. Or more normal haha. Yeah, i was 'around Sunnyvale' in early seasons, but then Cory and Trevor left the show they needed jail cover for the boys so my part was expanded (along with the Alien Trevors) in season 7.

I live abroad and once in a while I get asked about Canadian tv shows. I inevitably mention TPB is a must see classic. Are there any episodes that you feel really stand out?

Maybe begin with season 2?
The 'roughness' of season 1 might be a little challenging for some... though it tough because so much of the humour is based on knowing the Boy's characters, and ideally one would want to build up from the beginning.... i'd be curious to know others opinions about this.

As mentioned elsewhere today, i really need to re-watch ALL the seasons.

Are there anything’s you said no to while filming TPB?

haha, there usually say yes to crazy shit, from wearing a banana hammock to some of my own stunts like being cross-checked out the window by Ricky, but one time I can recall insisting on a stunt dude was the scene where the horse kicks 'me' through the barn wall (season 12).

The production had weakened the boards, and thought I could do it, but i think my back was feeling not-super-strong and i had a bad feeling about the stunt... so they got a stunt dude. It worked out pretty convincingly id say.

Are you willing to do any other projects?

totally. though my acting range is narrow, basically 'Jacob Collins' type characters... which are pretty much 'Jacob Rolfe' type characters....

Hint: Film it in India or Thailand. Our boi Jacob loves to travel in Asia.

Yeah from time to time actors would get the giggles, or break character when funny or unexpected stuff happens. One trick to try to save the scene is to turn away before breaking into a grin... at least its not on camera.

But I didn't have that issue much.. I sometimes one of my most valuable abilities on set is not laughing at funny shit.

specific scenes don't come to mind... my brain works in strange ways though, ill followup when i remember haha

It was a total blast, if at times nerve-racking for me as a non-trained-actor. John was a pleasure to work with, so gregarious... i remember most the scenes in season 7 where he wires me up to betray and get dirt on The Boys. He would go out of his way to make folks feel comfortable, what a bloke.
