That's fair and the normal case. However, often times teams sign an aging veteran to a much less than max deal only to be stuck with a large cap hit in the final years. It would make sense to have the decline in this situation. The player still receives the same dollar amount over the contract (excluding time value of money) and the team holds him at a smaller cap hit when the player is least valuable.

I agree the current nba is built to keep teams together with payscales that work for it. But I hardly see the exception which is why I asked

Why aren't front loaded contracts more common?

I would think it would provide benefits to both sides as the player can get their money up front and invest it for better returns, and the team with better flexibility as time passes.
