Perhaps this isn't what you're looking for but if you mean growing your own food and producing your own electricity then you should look at permaculture. Basically it's a system of design to grow food inline with nature to allow the natural systems to do most of the work for you. Just look at what Jeff Lawton did in the Dead sea valley. Also this is a good forum regarding permaculture and sustainability in general.
