Hi Stephen, just wanted to say after reading Freakonomics it inspired me to make ifiknewyou.com, which finds ridiculous correlations like "people who have at least one tattoo are more likely to have a better sense of balance"

I use R every now and then for small-level data analysis. I'm definitely not an expert on optimization, but I do know R's underlying rule of "never use loops, use apply instead" However, I've noticed that R is not as fast for some types of regression analysis as compared to STATA (which we use side by side)

Could I be doing something inefficiently, or is it possible that R is not as fast as other statistics software such as STATA?
