They diverged certainly - but when you look at where they started (specially chosen commander, prophet, super powerful aliens, widescale war coming about, etc.) there was more than a passing resemblance. And that's before we get to what B5 did to space combat.

Star Trek has something of a history of borrowing concepts from elsewhere, often without attribution.
