It's the same false dichotomy that makes people say things like "why are we debating same-sex marriage when we have an economic crisis to deal with!"
It's not an actual, logical answer of course. Most people recognize that you can care about many different issues at the same time. But if you really want to put an idea down, just pair it up with something you think will sound shockingly more important, and insult the person for not caring about that more important issue instead.
"How DARE you protest income inequality, you spoiled brat! Look at these soldiers laying down their lives for the country you're currently protesting, you're a disgrace to your flag!"
A sane and logical person will be able to look beyond the vitriol there and recognize that the link between soldiers overseas and economic protestors is tenuous at the very best. I lost a couple friends after they posted a picture where one half was caskets with American flags draped over-top (casualties from the war being brought home) and the other half was OWS protestors. The caption was essentially "some gave everything for their country, some just want everything from their country." It takes a real coward to make that comparison from the comfort of their home, on the front line of absolutely nothing.
