You know, this actually speaks to the whole "nothing to hide" issue. Here you have a situation where, down the road, the issue at hand would be found to be unconstitutional (ie: the NSL). But in order to even challenge the letter Merrill had to break the law and talk to his lawyer. Imagine a situation where that act was known and both Merrill and the lawyer were snapped up for breaking the law.
Without the ability to break the law we lose the ability to challenge it. If we lose the ability to challenge the law we've lost our freedom.

That's not what it's about.
As the US continues to erode the moral high ground that it held 30-40 years ago there is a vacuum left behind. We need a body, an international one at that, that holds the line of morality. In the 80's the Russians didn't care what the Americans said about freedom. But SOMEBODY WAS SAYING IT. At this point we cannot count on the US to take the lead anymore.
tl;dr: Who cares if the government listens... the people need to hear it.

Ethan,
I was just saying that, as an adult, this was what struck me most about the film. My daughter is 17, almost 18, and I am 35. I'm a young dad and I've grown a lot over the course of her life. You really managed to capture what you're describing, and on a personal level this touched me very deeply.
I was watching the film with my wife (who is not my daughter's mother), and at the beginning she asked me what I thought of your character. I told her we'd wait and see. She clearly looked down on him because of his restlessness. By the end of the film he is, in my opinion, the more stable parent. My wife was taken aback when we reached the end.
It's a beautiful film on so many levels and the way it is told is completely unique. Your pride is well earned.
ps. I recently said, "I'll see anything Ethan Hawke is in." Can't think of a better way to say thank you. Predestination was fantastic.

This assumes a government that respects law and order and won't simply pass an E.M.E.R.G.E.N.C.Y. act to get around the problem.
