I'm going to guess that /u/mylittlecuckold is not a native English speaker. "3th" is a pretty common non-native speaking mistake.

Severance is usually an amount they give you to tide you over until you find another job. For example, I worked at a company for 2 years before the company closed. I made roughly $15 an hour and was given about $5,000 in severance, which is paid out by the company. However, half of it was taken in taxes.

Edited for people who don't understand sarcasm: roughly 30% was taken in taxes.
