Conscription - with the option to of (non-military) National Service - usually full-time volunteering at a charity or NGO.
(There are also Academic streams Etudai - where advanced students go straight to school for law/engineering/communications/etc, fully funded. In return, they work professionally for the army for X years after graduation - as lawyers, engineers, etc.)
And the standard military jingoism that you'd find in most countries is reinforced in Israel by a defensive-minded attitude forged by the history, geography and (any of a number of) ideologies.
Add to that the fact that most every father was a soldier who (likely) fought in '56, '67, '74, '81, or elsewhere - so for an Israeli child, the Nationalist call is reinforced at home as a civic duty passed down through the generations. It's a strong national - and personal - sentiment, even among the "left", for the most part.
The visibility of conscientious objectors was raised by a rock star named Aviv Geffen who in the 90s was technically dischagred for medical reasons, but was an outspoken critic of conscription. There's a movie ("Aviv") about him somewhere - unseen by me.
Edit: Grammar

I used to get migraines preceded by aura. Now I get aura more frequently, but almost never followed by a migraine. What changed? (Not complaining, mind you.)
