Hey Reddit, Joe Jonas here. You may know me from spending the past year singing about Cake by the Ocean with my band DNCE. We just released our new single “Body Moves” from our upcoming self titled album so check it out here http://vevo.ly/BD5Dzv if you like the way that music sounds. If none of this rings a bell and you liked pop music sung by teenage boys in the 2000's, you might remember me from a band I was in with my brothers.

I’m a songwriter, taco fan, caffeine aficionado, former Pokemon trainer, connoisseur of popular television, and I work out sometimes. My band DNCE recently won a VMA for Best New Artist and I’ve gotten my ass kicked by Mickey Mouse on South Park.

Stoked to be here answering your questions - ask me anything!

Proof: https://twitter.com/joejonas/status/785899495544369152

Edit: That was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading all about my man crushes and my days with my brothers. Hopefully, we can do this again sometime!

And I'm going to take this moment to self-promote myself :) If you guys want, check out my new video for Body Moves and hopefully you guys will buy our album November 18th. If not, that's fine, too. See ya!

Is it true that youre the Jonas Bro thats hangin the most meat in his skinny jeans?

edit: He answered this comment when it was in the negatives, like a fucking champ

TheJoeJonas4241 karma

I like to think so. Although, it's not often that I'm in a locker room or shower with my brothers, so I couldn't really tell you. But, I'd like the Internet to believe that I'm still killin' it.

Do you still think there's a chance Year 3000 might go multiplatnum before the year 3000?

TheJoeJonas3015 karma

It's up to you, Reddit. If you can make that happen, I will be so thrilled.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how embarrassing is Camp Rock to you now?

TheJoeJonas3761 karma

Oh my god. My dance moves in CampRock were so terrible. I thought I was killing the game, too. Actually, Tyler The Creator posted it one day and I was like, "Oh, cool! Tyler thinks my dance moves are sick!" and I realized he was just totally calling me out for being a total dickhead and the way I danced, but respectfully. I think my flat iron hair and my squeaky voice are a little embarrassing. Also, I watch it now and realize it was so many years ago, it is really bad quality. It just reminds me of how much older I am now. I'm 27.

1-10 rating of how embarrassing CampRock is to me now, 10 being the most and 1 being the least, I'm going to give it a solid 8. When I see old merchandise from CampRock days or somebody is like, "Oh my god, CampRock is my jam", I really have a hard time believing them.

Who did you lose your virginity to?

PS- First saw you back in 2005- super cool to see guys from Bergen County take over the world. :)

TheJoeJonas4849 karma

I lost my virginity to this girl named Ashley. You can probably just Google it. It's pretty easy to figure out. I dated a girl named Ashley, so just Google it to figure out which Ashley that is. It's quite the great story because I didn't have any condoms, so I went to our drummer, Jack's room, who was my roommate at the time and I demolished his room looking for them. Found them underneath his underwear drawer. When he came home, he thought somebody broke into his room because his whole room was demolished because I was in dire need. Needed to happen then and now. Safety first, kids.

How did you first respond to South Park, and how do you view the episode now that the Jonas Brothers have been broken up for a while?

TheJoeJonas3265 karma

I loved it. When it first came out I was so pumped. I know that Nick was really kind of not into watching it, but I thought it was the funniest thing at the time and it's kind of a compliment because obviously if you go to a comedy show and they pick you out and make fun of you, you can't heckle back, you gotta just take it and enjoy it, and for me I've always been a fan and I knew that was kind of a wow we made it moment, and also they were kind of attacking Disney more than me, so I didn't really feel threatened. Now I watch it back and laugh and Mickey kicked my ass so I won the episode by being beat up by Mickey Mouse.

TheJoeJonas1311 karma

I once got in trouble at Disney World cause I took a picture of Mickey Mouse sitting down, and I had flashes like my life was gonna end of Mickey Mouse just like the cartoon in South Park beating the crap out of me just like the viral video of it actually happening in real life.

HarambeCode1258 karma

whats up with Nick's nipples, bruh? - shit is weird.

TheJoeJonas4180 karma

Nick's nipples are not as big as they may appear. It did take multiple surgeries to get them down to a normal size. I think it was like 30-40 surgeries to just get them to a little quarter shape.

RIP Harambe.

P.S. Dicks out for Harambe.

Hi Joe! Since this AMA is on Reddit and Reddit loves memes, What are your thoughts on the "lonely Kevin" meme?

Example: https://imgur.com/a/HZsCL

P.S. - Been a fan since 2007, and I'm loving seeing how you guys keep growing as far as music!! :)

TheJoeJonas1974 karma

I remember when that photo came out. It's actually a really funny story because we were legit late for something and Kevin was waiting on the corner. Nick and I were both together and we were heading to meet up with Kevin and he was just waiting on the corner looking at his phone, and now that it's like a part of the whole meme family. I'm really proud. I think at first Kevin was like dammit, did I really just become a meme, but now that Kevin is quite the internet savvy guy I think he appreciates it a lot. I also use it constantly. I've Tweeted it and Instagramed it a couple of times, so I definitely support Kevin memes.

Love_Suze954 karma

Hi Joe, what was your most bizarre experience throughout your career?

TheJoeJonas3257 karma

I've had a few pretty bizarre moments. There was one time that I was in Toronto and I was hanging out with my buddy John and we were invited to a U2 concert. We had an early morning the next day, but we were like we should probably go. Then somebody came up from Bono's PR, and they were like we would like you to invite to Bono's after party, and we were like that's not real, there's no way he wants us to come to an afterparty. But we were like you know what, just in case it's actually his invite we should just go for a few minutes and check it out, so we went to the party and we were waiting for probably about 30 minutes and we were starting to get ready to leave, I had like one or two drinks and it was time to get rolling, and we were like we're gonna wait for like five minutes, and surely five minutes late just like out of a movie, the doors open, it was as if it was a smoke machine, and Bono walks in, he was wearing jeans and a jean shirt buttons down to his belly button. He struts his way in and is doing the pointing at people and just being a total badass, sits down with us for probably the next 4 hours and we have the most amazing conversation, and inspiring, and we talk about him, I asked him for advice for writing songs and he's like don't be afraid to offend people, I have countries I'm not allowed back into for things I said, you have to really say it from your heart because it's what's important. It was such an incredible night. And I remember Colin Farrell was there as well, and I guess Colin Farrell sent one of the jerseys of a rival team at the time that Bono was to him, and he wrote something on the jersey to be like screw your team cause they have different teams, and Bono was so mad and was like "where is that bastard?!" and looking for him around the party to fight him, so definitely a memorable night.

highfashun127816 karma

With the anniversary of the Jonas Brothers break-up coming up this month, I can't help but be emo and reminisce on that period of time! You've talked about it before but generally reflecting back on that period, what was it like for you? You didn't speak for a month, you were accused of breaking up the band for drug addiction, you were scrutinized for being seen with a therapist, you weren't on speaking terms with your brothers… is that hard to look back on or are you more thankful for it given all of the growth that you've experienced since then?

TheJoeJonas2093 karma

I think that probably half of those questions are true. I was seeing a therapist and I wasn't on speaking terms with my brothers. When it happened, we were focussing on going on another tour and we had plans to hit the road and do what we had been doing for a while. Nick brought it to the table that he wanted to focus on different things, like acting and doing music on his own. At first, it was really shocking to me because it was kind of all I had known was the Jonas Brothers, forever. So, I was pretty mad and confused because, I was like, I've been putting so much time and effort into this for so long and now I just have to stop and figure out what's next. And maybe I was a little envious of Nick because I knew that he already had kind of a leg up and had plans to work on music already and he was creating and producing. So, I was probably mad at him, too. I remember kind of losing it a little bit and I didn't speak to anybody. I closed myself off and we cancelled the tour and didn't really know what was going on. We were honestly trying to figure out if it was the right decision to call it off or do a final tour or final goodbye, but I think, for all of us, we did it for ten years and it was a lot of time doing one thing. After taking some time away, I realized that maybe I could start to travel and do some other stuff. I really took a long time to figure it out and I wasn't even creating. I just traveled and tried to really find myself because I was doing this Jonas Brothers thing for so damn long. Now, I think that I'm really glad I took so much time away because I'm able to find myself and create music that I'm proud of. I started a little bit of acting and opened a restaurant. I was trying to see if maybe there was a different career path that I would go into. Ultimately, I realized that I really enjoy the music stuff, so that's really where I found home.

On the questions about the drug addition. That was all false. That probably would have made me look really cool, but unfortunately that wasn't real.

What was your weirdest fan encounter?

edit: ps - I am still in love with the Jonas Brothers

TheJoeJonas2909 karma

I don't know if anybody told you but the Jonas Brothers split up, I’m so sorry. Also my weirdest fan encounter actually happened three days ago. This woman was sitting outside my house in a car for a while and her car was completely full of furniture and clothes and my friend went up to the car to ask what was going on and she said that she was waiting for me and said that she was moving in and that she was waiting until I got home to start unloading her stuff from her car. So that's been one of the weirdest.

We also have a pretty good story. Our bass player, Cole, was on the bus a fan broke in and was sitting, waiting for him, and when he got on the bus she wanted to give him studio quality photos of her pet skunk riding a go-cart and that's all she wanted, so she handed him the photos and she left. We still have the photos too.

How do you feel about the fans that meet you in airports every time you land in a city?

TheJoeJonas1835 karma

It depends, I think sometimes it's flattering. I think it's nice to be able to see fans, especially ones that are from different countries that we've never been up to and they show their support. Other times it's a little creepy because they’re at places before we get there and I'm wondering how they figure that out. Did they tip somebody off? Does their aunt work for Delta. Let me know, I'm curious.

nonnymiss661 karma

What's it like living with your brother Nick?

TheJoeJonas2493 karma

Living with my brother Nick is great because it is actually like living alone. We decided to move in together because he was out of a lease and wanted to find a new place and he convinced me by saying, "You're really bored with your place, right?" and I was like... I guess. So, I moved out and then he forgot to tell me his lease wasn't up for six months, so I was without a house for a little while. Just floating around. Then we found a place in the valley of California and it's nice because he's been traveling and I'm home alone all the time. I get this nice sized house, just chilling. Also, when he comes into town, he came into town this past weekend, our housekeeper put a bunch of his new clothes in my closet and he left town to go finish filming Jumanji, so I don't have to go shopping. I just have a bunch of Nick's free new clothes now.

Do you ever stalk fan accounts? Instagram? Twitter? If so, how often? Do you have favorite accounts? Are there ones that you check on often? Do you have a second twitter just to creep?

Side note: Body Moves? Wow.

TheJoeJonas1729 karma

To answer your first question, do you ever stalk fan accounts, I totally do. On Instagram and Twitter. I love reading when people go off on each other. Like, if somebody is a big fan of another artist and somehow they tag each other in photos or tag me in photos and it's like trying to get me to get mad. I love watching fans interact and defend each other. Or fight. I do have a few favorites. There is a great twitter account called PeopleBehindJoe, which is just a collection of photos of the most random people behind me. From politicians to athletes to guys at gas stations. It's a really fun account, so I suggest you take a look.

TheJoeJonas1520 karma

We actually once played Hanson in a broomball tournament against New Kids On The Block and we beat Hanson really good. We swept the floor with them, but New Kids On The Block kind of put us to shame and made us realize that we're children. So, out of the three that you didn't ask, New Kids would win.

And if any of the members of Hanson are on Reddit and happen to be reading this. You still owe me to send me some of your MMMHops beer that you promised me back in 2011. Thanks.

How long did it used to take you to style your hair?

TheJoeJonas1103 karma

It depends on what hair generation we're talking about. I had really long hair at one point and I don't know why, but I wanted to have the hair like this guy from Tokio Hotel. It's a German Pop-Rock band and he has this beautiful anime style hair. For some reason, I decided to do my hair just like him, so it would take quite a while. He kind of looks like a cat, too. Props to that guy for taking that much time.

I would say it took a good 20-30 minutes to get it to the proper flat iron shape. Lesson learned. Last time I'll be doing that, kids!

Did you have a boner 100% of the time while filming the Body Moves music video? What was your favorite part about filming? (I feel like there is definitely quite a few.) Was there any embarrassing moments? It's definitely one of the sexiest music videos of all time. Tastefully sexy.

TheJoeJonas1377 karma

Thank you very much about saying it's tastefully sexy. There was definitely some half chubbing going on during the video. I wouldn't say a full blown boner, but I would say a haflie. I mean it's kind of hard not to in that situation especially when you're trying to be intimate, and also they put us in an elevator, me and Charlotte McKinney who I'm sure Reddit is very familiar with. They put her in an elevator with me and then they had kind of a hidden camera filming this whole time, and I had a great time doing the video.

Also, during our Toothbrush video I worked with Ashley Graham and the first thing out of her mouth - I never told anybody this - she actually said if you get a boner I'm gonna start to laugh, so that was how she broke the ice to get us comfortable on set.

Damn-autocorrect308 karma

Obviously, Matthew McConaughey is one, too. I think he's the man. So, between those two, there's a lot of man crushing going on.

Also, I'm pretty into this guy, Ken Bone, recently, tbh. He kind of takes top of the list for me. Depending on who he votes for.

What's your favorite song off DNCE's album that we haven't heard yet?

TheJoeJonas697 karma

We haven't heard a song called "Blown", it's got a feature by Kent Jones on the record, it's the only feature on the album and he did an amazing rap on it, and it's kind of just a vibey tune about letting loose and getting to know somebody, being wild and crazy, and it's one of my favorites, it's been on a lot of different movies for some reason and commercials. It's currently on a CitiBank commercial, and there was a Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles 2 which is a dream come true for anybody, and Megan Fox is taking her clothes off in the scene, so we won on two accounts.

What. Is. Cake. By. The. Ocean?

ohheyitslauren521 karma

I'm not Joe, but I think I know the answer. They were having a writing session with a song writer from Sweden and the Swedish songwriter was trying to say something about The alcoholic drink "Sex on the Beach", but something got lost in translation and he ended up saying "cake by the ocean" instead and they just kinda went with it!

TheJoeJonas781 karma

We were writing in the studio and trying to come up with new ideas and we kept having writers block cause and writing these R&B type songs. I believe one was called "Wet Dreams" which we never used because it was super cheezy, and one day we were just having fun and messing around and we wrote a bizarre tune called "Cake by The Ocean"

Thank you Lauren for answering on my behalf :)

What was/is your least favorite Jonas Brothers song?

EDIT: And why?

TheJoeJonas843 karma

We wrote a song once called Don't Charge Me For The Crime, which was like the weirdest story song we ever came up with about being the getaway driver for a bank robbery. Maybe it was a little ahead of it's time, being 16 year-old Disney kids, it's probably not the best song to be singing. And we got the opportunity to work with Common and he was totally into it. So, Common actually raps on the song. I don't know how we got away with this being on an album, especially working with Disney for so many years, but it's out there. I'd say it's probably my favorite and least favorite song, in the same right, because it's kind of fun to listen to now, but I'm like, how the hell did we get away with this?

Explain to me Coles outfits!? Does he ever wear anything normal? Does he just grab 3 items at random and is just like "eh ill make it work!" I love it, but dont understand it!

TheJoeJonas649 karma

I think part of the beauty of Cole is that that's genuinely him through and through. I lived with Cole for a while kind of on and off for the last year and a half, and then my favorite outfit he has a house dress, kind of a Hawaiian ladies dress that he found and he rocks it around the house quite a bit. My favorite is when he orders Post Mates and they come to the door and Cole answers in a dress, basically like a clown chasing the delivery guy.

I saw Cole once in a tuxedo once when we did Grease Live. It was essentially the scariest thing ever and Cole looked like a murderer. To see Cole in normal clothes is not ok, so he has to stick to what he's doing always.

Been a fan since forever (I think 9 maybe 10 years now?) so thanks for doing an AMA!

TheJoeJonas984 karma

Well, I have a few favorite bad movies. I really love Surfer Dude, the movie that stars Matthew Mcconaughey. If you've never seen it, you definitely should. Maybe have a little help from the marijuana and then watch. The movie is based on not being able to catch a wave in Malibu and the heartache from all of that. Also involves a reality surf television show that Matthew is trying to decide if he wants to star in or not. There's also an insane amount of co-stars. It's unbelievable. We actually did something recently with Matthew Mcconaughey and Cole, our bass player, told him that we're really big fans of the film and Matthew said, "You're one of the nine, brother".

Any specific reason "Jinx" didn't make it to the album?

TheJoeJonas276 karma

I think probably, it's a two part answer. It's already out there for people to hear, so it's on the EP so you can already hear it. And after creating over a year I feel like it didn't really make sense as much anymore to the full physical album, I wanted it to be a cohesive sounding record and I kind of evolved from that song. And I think every time, even when we performed it live I felt like it had kind of these feelings back when I was doing it with my brothers, I felt like it could've been one of our songs back then, so truthfully I think there are songs on the record that I think might be a little bit more mature, and I was coming up with the track listing and I was like hopefully nobody will cry about it, but I'm just gonna leave it off. I think that's one of the beauties about having an EP and then releasing a full album so that you could be able to dictate what you can put on and what you don't.

There's something my dad told me when we started,

Live like you're at the bottom, even if you're at the top.

So, that's something we've held onto for quite a while.

Recently, my manager, Philymack, said, "Try to take all news, like good news". And obviously, you can't use that all the time, for really bad stuff, but overall, being able to try to find the positive when you think the world is crumbling around you. I really think it's been resourceful and helpful.

Also a great quote that I say every time that I cheers when I have a drink is may all your ups and downs be in bed.

You are looking incredible lately and these Snapchats and Instagram posts are inspiring! I was wondering what your ideal cheat day looks like, though? What do you go in on?

Personally, mine are sandwich cookies (because i'm 7 years old on the inside) and also, cocktails.

In more important questions, What are all the taco toppings you enjoy? Starting from meat. Don't forget any--it's super important!

TheJoeJonas451 karma

I feel like this is a weird creepy fantasy about tacos, but to answer your first question well best of luck with your health and fitness that's great, I would say for me my ideal cheat day there's a place here called Salt and Straw in LA, if you ever visit you should definitely go. They have this insanely good cookie dough ice cream there, and they make their own waffle cones, it's insane. In NYC and it has nothing to do with the name I promise Joe's Pizza on Bleeker & 13th is bomb, and the pizza there is incredible, especially if you're gonna go out late all night and then stop there at 3 in the morning with an A&W root beer, I honestly have many cheat days. Also Krispy Creme donuts, I'm a big fan. I'm a classic guy though I like to just have the classic Krispy Creme right out of the oven too. And I would say burger, I would just take burgers and fries. In N Out Burger is my favorite fast food joint.

And Tacos. I forgot about the tacos. Tacos toppings starting from the meat. If I go to Chipotle I like to just have, I actually ask them for double chicken. I also once asked them how much it would be to buy the whole chicken tray, $6. So now you now. So if you ever just want a shit ton of chicken, $6 people.

TheJoeJonas324 karma

Yes, I love cigars a lot. Me and Nick are both big enthusiasts of cigars. We will hopefully plan a trip to Cuba soon and can go to factories and smoke cigars the entire time we're there. I personally love Cohibas and Bogey’s. Tatuaje is also a family friend company of ours and we actually toured with the owners for a while. They came on the road with us in South America and after the show they would set up shop and they would have cigar rollers and we would hang out and smoke. The reason I love cigars is because I grew up around lot of people who smoked cigars and I always loved the smell. Then I tried one for myself and I think I got horribly sick. I also had a smoothie right before, so I was hugging the toilet for a few hours (that means throwing up). Now, I love them. I think it's a nice little past time and a little vice in my life.

Why did you create DNCE?

TheJoeJonas273 karma

I created DNCE after working on music and writing on my own for a while. I always thought about what it would be like to be in another band and I think that's one of the beauties about music - you get to do whatever you want. There's no one sitting there telling you exactly what to do. You can just create. I could create a country record or who knows what and luckily enough for me I had three really amazing friends who were looking for something new for themselves, as well. They're incredibly talented and I'm glad that they want to take this journey with me. I've always felt comfortable being in a band and I wanted to do something that was in my wacky brain and luckily enough, people dig us writing songs about pastries and toothbrushes. So, thanks for listening!

It has to be a place that they are particularly really rude to you and the lines very long and they take at least 5-10 minutes to make a latte, a lot of reclaimed wood and exposed brick...chalkboard menu, preferably. I'm a cold brew guy, but I do like a latte once in awhile. There's a great movie called Barista I watched recently. I'm a huge fan now of all the different guys and girls that compete in those competitions. I plan on going to one of the competitions eventually and trying their specialty drinks.

When are you touring again?!?!

TheJoeJonas62 karma

We pretty much have a bunch of spot dates for the rest of the year, and some different radio shows during the holidays, but we are hopefully to do a bigger tour during the springtime/summer of 2017. We'd love to do a world tour to go to a lot of different places like Japan and a lot of different cities in Europe, so I feel like it would be a longer one. Maybe it will be a DNCE tour solely, but we've talked about maybe linking up and going out on tour and co-headlining with a DJ or something like that too.

Based on everything you know and have experienced now, if you could go back in time (with all that experience and knowledge), what do you think is another career path you would’ve taken, if not music or acting? For me, if I knew what I knew now, I would go back to 18 so that I can go to college for entertainment management, I realized to late that it was a passion. So what is it for you? If you HAD to choose?

Honestly, I don't think I'd want to do anything else. I have never really thought about doing anything but music. But, if I was in a time machine and there was really no other path to be taken and I couldn't sing, I guess working with animals in some way. I've always loved being able to help in any way with adoption shelters. I have three animals, two of which are adopted. I love them to death, so I feel like I'd like to be able to do that. Or work on a boat. I love ships, so I think it would be cool to travel the world by boat. Maybe one day I'll do that - at my dinner party with Bill Murray.

if you could have anyone musically narrate your life who would it be?

TheJoeJonas29 karma

I would have Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein do it. They are the Stranger Things composers. I would have them narrate every moment. It'ld be really fun, like, as you're sitting on the toilet and you hear those big sounds. Everything would be so suspenseful and intense. Wake up in the morning and open the curtains and you hear those big noises. So, Kyle & Michael, if you have nothing to do for the rest of your lives, call me.

where is your cats?Do you like more?

TheJoeJonas29 karma

I like all animals. If it was acceptable to have lots of different animals around, I would. As for my cats, my buddy Carl says they're in the slammer, but they're in one of those bougie cat hotels here in LA, yes I'll admit it they're in a place like that. Something like Chatau Meow or play on words like that. They have a television in the room or something ridiculous, but if I'm gonna spend my money on something it would be for my cats to have a good life.

Also, I'm traveling like 99% of the year, and I never really have the opportunity to see him.
